Interview: Katrina Tan of PuglyPixel

Katrina Tan is a San Francisco based blogger extraordinaire. Her brainchild, puglypixel, features gorgeous, simple design as well as beautiful photos, clip-art and tutorials. I'm so proud to feature her as my first interview.

*How would you describe your aesthetic?
Gosh, this is a hard one... let's see.... okay, how about:  clean and simple with touches of color.

*Your personality in 3 words:
In this order and applies to how I am with people I know since I'm pretty quiet around strangers.
1. dorky
2. goofy
3. DORKY again (all caps for emphasis)
Much Love Monday

*It's clear kawaii is an inspiration for you. How did you first get into kawaii and does it influence your fashions as well as web design?
I've loved cute as far back as I can remember.  I think it all started with Hello Kitty.  That cat has possessed my soul with cute and I've become quite an addict!

Now that you mention it -- yes, kawaii/cute is a huge influence all my life.  I don't think I ever mentioned this but I used to work at Sanrio in my early college days.  To the present day, I can't seem to escape "cute".  I visit japantown regularly and always stop by the stationery shops for my kawaii fix.
Vintage Japanese Cabochons
*Where do you get the ideas/objects which you use to create your clip art and brushes?
Many of these ideas are inspired from various magazine layouts, most notably Frankie magazine (rounded corners and dotted borders), Fudge magazine (clean white background), and japanese collage craft books.
Dali Goodpack
*When did the joy of pugs enter your life?
My husband and I adopted taco (my father's dog) about two years ago.

*You've stated before that you often let your inner child make purchasing decisions. What are said inner child's most treasured items?
My 0.3 japanese gel pen collection, Rement miniature collection, and japanese paper craft books.

*Tell me about your analogue art.
I take snapshots with my Diana Mini.  Sometimes, I take photos with my Holga.  I doodle a lot and whether that's art or not remains to be seen! :)
Much Love Monday
*Which artists are your main visual influences?
Monet, Renoir, Degas and contemporary artists  Gemma Correll and Helen Dardik

*If  puglypixel was an outfit, what would that outfit look like?
Hmmm... this is a hard one, but here goes:
Red matte lipstick with hair fixed in a loose but fitted black/white striped crew neck t-shirt under an unbuttoned loose white cotton blouse (tshirt and blouse untucked) [with] boy cut dark denim jeans, folded at the ankles [and] black flats.

This doesn't match my blog's color theme, but heck, it's an outfit I'd love to wear! :)

Thanks to everyone for tuning in to my first (but not last) interview. Do visit puglypixel; you'll be glad you did.
